Interested in buying your own island just in time for summer? Check out the five-acre Ram Island, a rustic island not far from the mainland of Maine’s Wheeler Bay and the St. George Peninsula. This fully wooded island boasts a safe mooring, southern exposure to open ocean, a small sandy beach, and approximately 2,760-square-feet of living spread over multiple buildings.

The unique island structures—which total four bedrooms and two bathrooms—were built over a five-year period. The design clustered the structures around a courtyard in order to build them quickly in the warm summer months, and each building is connected to the others by boardwalk and stone paths. Construction required a large barge to be loaded with supplies and carted across the bay where everything was unloaded by hand and carried to the building site.

Ram Island is self-sustaining; solar panels were added in 1985 and upgraded in 2010; rainwater is collected in large cisterns for cooking and bathing; and propane tanks are filled once a year to power the stove, refrigerator, hot water heater, and generator.

Interiors are camp style with lots of exposed wood and Arts and Crafts elements. The main building includes an open kitchen, dining and living area, and a large stone fireplace. A plethora of windows allow for views to the outdoors, and the compound also includes a library, a master wing, and a guest building with three bedrooms and a bath.

Other amenities include approximately 1,700 feet of shorefront, a sheltered tidal dock, outdoor shower, tent platform for overflow guests, and well-maintained walking trails. This off-the-grid getaway is on the market now for $1,395,000.
