@ Webado Webada, wishing you all the best in this endeavor! Such a reality in the 21st century for those of us around retirement age. I would at least tell your son he has a deadline for taking care of his stuff even if you can't get hubby to get busy. You may have to make life uncomfortable for awhile by forcing the issue.

My hubby has a workbench in the garage still in the box and never set up, and tons of stuff to organize -- we need to build shelving desperately! For us it's a matter of finding the time and money and not being overwhelmed. A lot of stuff in the garage just needs a dumpster and getting one in here is down the road sometime, maybe this spring. But his disorganization is as bad as mine. Plus we are people who just don't get things done very quickly. Sigh.

When his mom had some relatives help clean out Dad's garage, she forgot that these people had stolen stuff from her before and sure enough they helped themselves to some scrap metal and other things. One thing that went missing was an antique anvil that a beloved great uncle had passed on to my husband. She and he both grouse about that missing anvil, which admittedly may have been worth money but had much more sentimental value. They can't prove it was stolen but it's missing and theft seems obvious. I am not a sentimental person much at all, certainly not where his family is concerned, and my take on it is, what the heck would you do with it if you had it? It will never be used for anything and will just take up space and be decluttered by some descendant down the road. But of course I've never said this to him or his mom!

Oh dear! An anvil .... Well it can be good for holding together whatever you need to glue such as shoes and soles .... I prefer to just dump broken shoes LOL. My dad would have kept it .... LOL

We solved the issue of shelving in the garage by buying PVC shelf units from Costco - big, sturdy, easy to put together in just a few minutes and not expensive at all, at least not expensive several years ago at around $30 for each 5-shelf unit. I got those one day when I was fed up with boxes and junk eating up the garage floor. Mind you, getting the shelving is one thing, decluttering the junk is quite another. And so it happened that much of the clutter ended up on the shelves pending future decluttering sprees ;)

As for dumpster, we didn't get that. Instead we called 1-800-got-junk and they hauled all the discarded stuff away. Yes, it can be pricey, but they are really quick and will take everything from wherever it is, that you just point out. So we also cleared a lot of the junk from the basement without having to haul it upstairs ourselves, as well as around the yard and from the shed.

Organization is my super power! ;-) With that said, my super powers only work in my house with my stuff! I think everyone needs to organize their own life otherwise you may never know where anything is ;-p Also, I recommend tackling one thing at a time? baby steps as it were, it can be overwhelming if you have let things go!
